A Jewish synagogue makes a comeback in Lebanon

The last remaining synagogue in Beirut is undergoing restoration, and will soon host its first rabbi in nearly 40 years. Only 150 members of the Jewish community remain in Lebanon.

Amid the new tower blocks that are changing this city?s skyline rises a newly restored symbol of Beirut?s multireligious society.

The Magen Abraham synagogue is the last Jewish place of worship to survive in Beirut, a lone reminder that a few decades ago a thriving Jewish community lived in the city center.

The Jewish faith is one of the 18 officially recognized sects that exist in Lebanon. When the synagogue was built in 1920 there were some 12,000 Jews in Lebanon. But the Arab-Israeli conflict and Lebanon?s devastating 1975-90 civil war spurred Jews to emigrate, and today there are only around 150 left here.

The last rabbi departed in 1975, and the synagogue fell into disrepair. Much of the structural damage was inflicted, ironically, by shelling from Israeli gunboats in 1982.

Restoration began two years ago and was funded by donations from Lebanese Jews both in Lebanon and overseas. The interior has been restored to its original d?cor with sky-blue walls, arched windows, and whitewashed columns with small brown painted streaks that mimic the fossilized shells in the original limestone columns. Work is expected to be completed by summer, and the first rabbi in nearly four decades is expected to arrive soon.

?Once the rabbi is here, we will be able to hold weddings again,? says a Jewish Council member in Lebanon who oversaw the restoration. He declines to allow his name to be quoted, illustrating that Lebanese Jews still prefer to maintain a low profile.

New Project - Family Woodworking

One on my daughters has asked me to build an office desk for her husband. He is a insurance adjuster and spends quite a bit of time in his home office. He is also a pretty big guy. 6' 5" tall and about 260 pounds. So needless to say I'm going to have to make it taller than normal and the space between the pedestals wider than normal. with a baby expected any day now she wants a desk that will hide his tower and printer to keep it from curious little hands.

I'm thinking about building it from ash mostly because of the cost of the wood. Everything that I've built for them in the past has been either maple, walnut or cherry but saving myself over $100 in the cost of lumber has me almost convinced to give it a try. I buy all my lumber from these folks http://www.neforestproducts.com/ and usually get a small discount or some free wood because I always bring coffee and donuts

Question for you folks. Is ash a decent choice? how does it mill and finish? It looks a bit like oak to me and oak doesn't really fit into the style of her house. Maybe I should dip into the Social Security a bit and go for the maple

Reading: Why Greg Smith Left Goldman Sachs (March, 2012)

Greg Smith has created a significant buzz on Wall Street. When he resigned on March 14th as an executive director at Goldman Sachs, one of the world?s largest investment banks, he decided to publish his resignation letter in the New York Times. Needless to say, he has definitely burned his bridges with his former employer. After 12 years at Goldman Sachs, which he writes was ?long enough to understand the trajectory of [the company?s] culture?, Smith claims he could no longer in good conscience identify with what the company stood for. He complains of a shift in the company?s practices from protecting client interests towards a culture of money-grubbing in which the client?s interests are sidelined. According to Smith, the mission today is to get clients to trade whatever brings the biggest profit to Goldman. He writes:

?Integrity? It is eroding. I don?t know of any illegal behavior, but will people push the envelope and pitch lucrative and complicated products to clients even if they are not the simplest investments or the ones most directly aligned with the client?s goals? Absolutely. Every day, in fact.?

He described an environment where colleagues callously boast about ripping off clients, whom directors refer to as ?muppets.?

Smith concludes his letter by stating:

?I hope this can be a wake-up call to the board of directors. Make the client the focal point of your business again. Without clients you will not make money. In fact, you will not exist. Attacking Iran: Did US just torpedo Israeli deal for a base in Azerbaijan?

Israel is developing a 'secret staging ground' in Azerbaijan for a possible attack on Iran, reports Foreign Policy magazine. US officials aren't happy with that, and may have leaked the story.

The three-way tension between the United States, Israel, and Iran became tenser this week with a widely cited report that Israel is developing a ?secret staging ground? in Iran?s neighbor to the north ? Azerbaijan ? for a possible attack on Iran?s nuclear facilities.

Quoting unnamed senior US diplomats and military intelligence officials, a lengthy article in Foreign Policy magazine asserts that ?Israel has recently been granted access to airbases on Iran's northern border.?

"The Israelis have bought an airfield," a senior administration official is quoted as saying, "and the airfield is called Azerbaijan."

Why would US officials be talking about this? Likely to slow down any rush to war in an already volatile region, some speculate.

"I think this leak today is part of the administration's campaign against an Israeli attack," former US diplomat John Bolton said Thursday on Fox News.
?
"Clearly, this is an administration-orchestrated leak," Mr. Bolton said, adding, "It's just unprecedented to reveal this kind of information about one of your own allies.?

The challenge for Israel in planning such a strike is the long distance to potential targets ? some 2,000 miles round-trip ? for its F-15 and F-16 fighters. Planning for such strikes always involves tradeoffs between fuel and bombs.

Bases in nearby Azerbaijan (including abandoned former Soviet airfields) could be used for landing and refueling after any strike, allowing Israeli jets to carry more ordnance. Such airfields also could be a staging point for search-and-rescue helicopters that might be necessary to recover downed Israeli pilots. They also could be used to launch drone aircraft for bomb damage assessment once any strike is concluded.

Israel and Azerbaijan have developed an economic military relationship over the years.

Israel buys oil from Azerbaijan, and Azerbaijan recently agreed to buy $1.6 billion in military hardware from Israel, including drones, antiaircraft, and missile-defense systems.

This week?s report of a possible basing agreement with Israel does nothing to improve the relationship between neighbors Azerbaijan and Iran.

Whale caught in fishing net rescued off Calif. coast

A California gray whale is moving freely after rescuers spent seven hours untangling it from a discarded fishing net off the Orange County coast, local media reported.

The young whale was spotted Friday night off the coast of Dana Point Harbor, Calif., covered in nearly 50 feet of fishing wire. Rescue crews suspected it had been dragging the nylon netting, which was filled with dead sea animals,?for nearly a week.

"We had a sea lion, we had several sharks?...? the whole ecosystem, you know,?was in that netting," Dave Anderson, who works with DolphinSafari.com and was part of the weekend rescue,?told NBCLosAngeles.com.

Anderson got permission from the National Marine Fisheries Services Friday evening to attach a buoy to the mammal to monitor it overnight as a team of wildlife experts assembled for a rescue attempt the following morning, The Los Angeles Times reported.

The challenge: to cut through the netting without hurting the whale, which they named "Bart" after one of the boaters who stayed with the whale overnight as it drifted up the coast, reported The LA Times.

The rescue involved seven tiring hours of sawing through the nylon as rescue crews followed the whale for mile after mile out to sea.

"It was getting very frightening towards the end of the day because we were running out of time," Anderson told NBCLosAngeles.com. Crews were using grappling hooks and lines to reel in the mammal and a knife to cut away debris, according to The LA Times. Then, at last, a line snapped as the whale dived down, pulling buoys down with it.

"Those buoys just went under the water all of a sudden," Anderson told NBCLosAngeles.?"And when they went under?the water, I mean, it was like a scene from 'Jaws.'"

When the whale came back up, he was free.

Anderson, who?does whale-watching tours,?told NBCLosAngeles.com that many dolphins and whales die in fishing nets each year, and he's grateful to have saved one.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Stock futures edged lower Tuesday ahead of a report that economists expect will show just how much Americans are feeling squeezed by rising gasoline prices.

Dow Jones industrial average futures fell 2 points to 13,198 and the Standard & Poor's 500 index futures fell 0.4 points to 1,414.70. The Nasdaq composite index futures fell a point to 2,776.

The price for a gallon of gas has risen 17 cents this month alone, well ahead of the traditional start of the driving season. That begins over the Memorial Day weekend.

Prices are also just a dime away from surpassing last year's peak and energy experts believe they will keep going up.

High gasoline prices are taking their toll on consumers, which could threaten the nascent economic recover. Those consumers account for about 70 percent of the nation's economic activity and their habits are watched closely.

On Monday, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke signaled that the U.S. would continue with an accommodative economic policy with the employment picture still shaky.

That is certainly what many people are feeling right now.

The Conference Board is expected to report Tuesday that its consumer confidence index slipped to 70.0 in March from 70.8 in February, according to a FactSet poll.

The report from the private business group will be released around 10 a.m. Eastern.

Also on Tuesday, Walgreen Co.'s second-quarter earnings fell almost 8 percent due to its decision to leave the Express Scripts pharmacy network, but the performance still topped analyst expectations.

The drugstore's shares rose 2 percent before the market opened.

If you can't handle credit cards, you need to stay away from them. That said, I do take it a bit farther as I actually try to maximize my credit card earnings (almost $2,300 in earnings last year.) Why not earn a bit extra to boot? ;-)

Of course on the opposite side of the credit card debate is Dave Ramsey who is 100% against credit cards in any way for any reason. I understand where he's coming from, both personally as well as for those he advises, but to me there are too many benefits of credit cards to throw out the baby with the bathwater. Use them in a way that benefits you financially and keep them from harming you in any way, and credit cards can provide a nice boost to an overall solid financial plan.

U.S. senator asks FTC to probe Apple, Google

NEW YORK?? A U.S. senator has urged the Federal Trade Commission to investigate reports that applications on the Apple and Google mobile systems steal private photos and contacts and post them online without consent.

Democrat Charles Schumer's request comes after iPhone maker Apple tweaked its privacy policies last month after prodding from other lawmakers.

The distribution of third-party applications on iPhones and phones running on Google's Android system has helped create a surge in the popularity of those devices in recent years.

However, Schumer said on Sunday that he was concerned about a New York Times report that iPhone and Android applications can access a user's private photo collection.

He also referred to a discovery last month that applications on devices such as the iPhone and iPad were able to upload entire address books with names, telephone numbers and email addresses to their own servers.

"These uses go well beyond what a reasonable user understands himself to be consenting to when he allows an app to access data on the phone for purposes of the app's functionality," Schumer said in a letter to the FTC.

The lawmaker said it was his understanding that many of these uses violate the terms of service of the Apple and Android platforms. He said "it is not clear whether or how those terms of service are being enforced and monitored."

As a result, he said, "smartphone makers should be required to put in place safety measures to ensure third party applications are not able to violate a user's personal privacy by stealing photographs or data that the user did not consciously decide to make public".

Schumer said phone makers have an obligation to protect the private content of their customers.

"When someone takes a private photo, on a private cellphone, it should remain just that: private," said Schumer.

VP Biden goes to Latin American amid drug debate

Vice President Joe Biden heads to Latin America Sunday amid unprecedented pressure from political and business leaders to talk about something U.S. officials have no interest in debating: decriminalizing drugs.

Presidents of Costa Rica, Guatemala, El Salvador, Colombia and Mexico, all grappling with the extremely violent fallout of a failing drug war, have said in recent weeks they'd like to open up the discussion of legalizing drugs. Argentina, Uruguay, Peru and Mexico already allow the use of small amounts of marijuana for personal consumption, while political leaders from Brazil and Colombia are discussing alternatives to locking up drug users.

Business leaders are weighing in as well: in February, a group of banking, medical and legal experts sponsored a drug policy conference in Mexico City which concluded that current drug control policies aren't working and need reform.

"It's a different moment when you have actual heads of state talking about the need for a thorough debate on this," said John Walsh, a drug policy expert at the Washington Office on Latin America, an independent think tank. "It's certainly different for sitting presidents to be uttering those words. You wouldn't have thought it possible just a few years ago."

Dan Restrepo, the top Latin America official in the White House, briefing reporters about Biden's upcoming trip, said the vice president does expect a "robust conversation" about the security problems Latin American countries face as drug traffickers battle to control the lucrative U.S. sales. But he said Latin American leaders shouldn't expect a shift in policy.

"The Obama administration has been quite clear in our opposition to decriminalization or legalization of illicit drugs," said Restrepo.

Biden is scheduled to arrive in Mexico City on Sunday to discuss economic and security issues with Mexican President Felipe Calderon. He also plans to meet Monday with the three top Mexican presidential candidates running for a six-year term to replace Calderon this year.

On Tuesday Biden is slated to travel to Honduras to meet President Porfirio Lobo, along with the presidents of El Salvador, Panama, Costa Rica and Guatemala, all countries struggling with the sweeping consequences of expanding drug cartels. Drug gangs have killed tens of thousands, overcrowded prisons are overflowing with accused drug users while powerful cartels fuel corruption ? influencing elections, weakening democracies and threatening fragile economies.

"I do think that the issue of legalization will be raised by the leaders to Biden, but in private," said Walter McKay, a policing expert on security issues in Mexico, where more than 47,500 people have been killed in drug gang violence since 2006.

Two weeks ago, Guatemala's president Otto Perez Molina, a right wing conservative and former army general, stunned observers when he declared the U.S. inability to cut illegal drug consumption leaves his country with no option but to consider legalizing the use and transport of drugs. He vowed to galvanize regional support.

Since then, Costa Rican President Laura Chinchilla and El Salvador's President Mauricio Funes have said they're open to the discussion, while Panama's leaders say they do not agree with decriminalizing drugs.

For decades Latin Americans leaders and the U.S. have cooperated on a war on drugs, with more than a trillion dollars spent by the U.S. to support enforcement and eradication in Latin America, as well as promises to reduce cocaine, marijuana and methamphetamine use in the U.S. that generates an estimated $25 billion in profits each year.

But during that time, demand for drugs has increased, fueling violent competition between dealers.

In 2009, former presidents of Mexico, Brazil and Colombia blasted the war on drugs and said it was time to consider the decriminalization of marijuana. Last summer they were joined by more than a dozen high level international leaders including former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan and former U.S. officials George P. Shultz and Paul Volcker, again slamming the war on drugs as a failure and calling on governments to undertake experiments to decriminalize the use of drugs, especially marijuana, to undermine the power of organized crime.

But while it's one thing for former presidents to suggest decriminalizing drugs, it is another thing entirely when sitting presidents do so, said retired Brazilian judge Maria Lucia Karam in an email to The Associated Press.

Karam said that while Latin American leaders at first may have been willing to give the "get tough" strategy time to work, they've been worn down by the drug war's relentless toll.

"The public comments we are seeing are a sign of deep frustration and anger that is now prevalent in Latin America due to the U.S. and U.N.'s seeming unwillingness to engage in a serious debate about implementing effective drug policies that respect human rights and truly protect health," she said.

Danny Kushlick, who heads the London-based Transform Drug Policy Foundation, said the region is "on the verge of a tipping point that will begin when the Latin Americans raise the issue within earshot and in full view of the Americans. Ultimately this is about allowing democratic conversations to take place without being leaned upon by the U.S."

But former U.S. drug czar John Walters said those who are calling for a debate on legalization are taking a dangerous and misguided step.

"I would note to them that the kind of dangerous people they face would welcome that change, to become more powerful," he said. "Legalizing is not a solution, it's an excuse."

It Was a Year of Scandal for the Governator

After leaving office as California governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger made plenty of headlines ? most of them in the tabloids.

Madeleine Albright Receives USCIS Honor

United States Citizenship and Immigration Services honored former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright with its Outstanding American by Choice award.

Born in Prague, Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic), in 1937, she emigrated to the United States as a teenager as her family fled communist rule in the Soviet bloc.

Albright became the first woman to serve as secretary of state when Bill Clinton appointed her in 1996. Albright was a strong supporter of an expanded NATO and the Clinton administration?s ?assertive multilateralism.? ,p>She became a U.S. citizen while studying at Wellesley College in the 1950s.

Ozzie Guillen Named Miami Marlins Manager

The newly renamed Miami Marlins?signed Ozzie Guillen to a four-year, $10 million deal to manage the ballclub.

Along with his wife and son, the Venezuelan native took the Oath of Allegianceon Jan. 20, 2006, his 42nd birthday and only three months after he led the Chicago White Sox to the World Series Championship.

Pierce Brosnan Makes Frightening Return to TV

Irish actor Pierce Brosnan made a triumphant return to television, starring in the miniseries ?Bag of Bones,? an A&E Network production based on a 1998 Stephen King novel.

Brosnan?s last big gig on TV was as detective Remington Steele.

Huffington Sells Web Site to AOL and Pockets Millions

Born Arianna Stasinopoulou in Athens, Greece, she became a naturalized American citizen in 1990.

In February, AOL announced it was paying her $315 million to acquire The Huffington Post, the news site she co-founded.

As part of the deal, Huffington, 61, agreed to stay on as president and editor-in-chief of the Huffington Post Media group within AOL. Not bad for an on-line journalist who believes journalists should work for free.

'Housewives' actress says she was stunned when hit

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Nicollette Sheridan told jurors on Thursday that she was shocked and humiliated after being struck in the head by the creator of "Desperate Housewives" on the set of the hit ABC show.

The actress was the first witness called during her trial alleging that she was fired after a dispute with creator and executive producer Marc Cherry. She is seeking more than $6 million in damages.

At the request of her attorney, Patrick Maloney, the actress demonstrated the blow by striking her lawyer in court. Sheridan contended it was a hard blow, although attorneys for Cherry and ABC claimed it was a light tap meant to give the actress some direction for a scene.

Sheridan told jurors that Cherry appeared stunned after the hit and later apologized to her.

Wearing a navy blue suit and white blouse, Sheridan split the day testifying about the show's early years and the dispute with Cherry and its aftermath.

Her character Edie Britt was killed off in the show's fifth season, when she was earning $175,000 an episode. By then, she also had been granted a portion of the series' profits by that point and was slated to earn $250,000 an episode if she remained on the series through the seventh season.

She testified that although Cherry had left her character's fate in doubt at the end of seasons three and four, he never mentioned killing her off until after he hit her and was cleared by ABC executives of wrongdoing.

Cherry and ABC have denied wrongdoing and said they will present evidence that the decision to kill off Britt was made months before his argument with Sheridan and had to be approved by top executives at the network.

The scene that led to the dispute between Sheridan and Cherry was originally not meant to include the actress' character. Her role was added after several revisions and was a short scene in which Britt needled her on-screen husband about how to write a love song.

A later script called for her to strike him with a magazine.

Maloney showed jurors various versions of the script, and played a montage of some of Sheridan's highlights from the show, including her attempting to seduce men and washing a car with her blouse unbuttoned and bra exposed.

Some jurors laughed as the scenes were played. Many had seen the show in its early seasons.

Sheridan told the panel that she wasn't similar to her character. "I think honesty is about the only thing we shared," she said.

"Desperate Housewives," a glossy prime-time comedy/soap opera with an ensemble cast including Hatcher and Longoria, made a pop-culture and ratings splash when it premiered in 2004 but has seen its audience dwindle. It is in its last season.

Cherry is expected to testify, and series stars Teri Hatcher, Eva Longoria, Marcia Cross and Felicity Huffman are listed as potential witnesses.
