FACEBOOK ON THE BRINK OF COLLAPSE! | Weekly World News
Rumors are once again circulating that Facebook is on the brink of? total collapse!
Some are speculating that th the demise of Facebook bring down the entire U.S. economy and all the world financial markets.? Some on Wall Street are saying it could be worse than the Great Depression.? ?We may be heading back to 1850,? said one Wall Street trader.
Facebook?s in trouble, that?s what. Now in the crosshairs of public scrutiny, everybody?s taking potshots. And the warnings are just beginning.
Everything from Facebook being ?too big to fail or succeed? to a Chicago attorney warning that the stock could ?crater? if Facebook can?t grow revenues 41% annually for five years to ?sustain its value? to a warning that Facebook?s one of the ?black swans? that could eventually bring down the global economy.
And there?s the exclusive WWN breaking story that Facebook is shutting down on July 15h.
Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) stock is down nearly 18% from its initial public offering since it started trading on Nasdaq, and analysts suggest that things can get worse. The social network faced problems with Nasdaq?s handling of the IPO from the very beginning, including delayed launch from a stated 11.05am to 11.30am, and other technical issues. The situation today, however, runs deeper.
?After months of hype building up to this IPO, you?re convinced Facebook is your soul mate, that not getting shares in that IPO would leave you devastated, rejected by your true love. And nothing anyone says about the risks will change your mind. That?s the ?psychology of denial.?
The Facebook mystique is so powerful today that in our minds Facebook truly is too big to fail. Facebook will never fail. Facebook will just keep growing indefinitely at rates that would remind us of the old dot-com mindset of 1999. Hail, Facebook ? you are too big to fail, and nothing will change our minds.
But? we are all wrong.? And experts on and off Wall Street are predicting that if Facebook fails, then the whole American economy will collapse and when the American economy collapses then the whole world economy will collapse and will all be living in cardboard boxes? with NO friends.
Here?s what it might look like when Facebook collapses:
Can Facebook be saved somehow, some way?
Yes!? Stockholders are looking at getting rid of Mark Zuckerberg and hiring these guys to run the company:
Will the Winklevoss twins save Facebook?? Will they save the world?
What do you think?

Factors behind past lemur species extinctions put surviving species in 'ecological retreat'

New research out today on the long-term impact of species extinctions suggests that the disappearance of one species does not necessarily allow remaining competitor species to thrive by filling now-empty niches.
Instead, in University of Cincinnati-led research on lemur extinctions over the past 2,000 years, findings suggest that one likely result of changes that lead to species' extinctions is that remaining species go into "ecological retreat." And that retreat can result in new selective and ecological pressures that then increase the extinction risk of surviving species, potentially creating an "extinction cascade."
These conclusions are found in today's online Proceedings of the Royal Society B, the British Royal Society's flagship biological research journal, in an article titled "Extinction and Ecological Retreat in a Community of Primates" by lead author Brooke Crowley, assistant professor of anthropology and geology at UC.
Co-authors are Laurie Godfrey, professor of anthropology at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst; Thomas Guilderson, research scientist, and Paula Zermeno, scientific associate, both of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory; Paul Koch, professor of earth & planetary sciences at the University of California at Santa Cruz, and Nathaniel Dominy, associate professor of anthropology at Dartmouth College.
Using radiocarbon and isotope analysis from fossils of eight large-bodied lemur species that have died out in Madagascar since the arrival of humans to the island 2,000 years ago, the research team was able to determine the type of habitat in which lemurs in the past lived, their diets, when they died out and whether other still-extant species filled vacated environmental niches.
Findings show that prior to extensive human disturbance, lemurs were very common in open habitats of wooded savannah and spiny thicket on Madagascar, which constitutes the majority of southwestern Madagascar today.
But after the larger-sized lemurs that once inhabited those regions went extinct, related species that existed then and are still extant today could not fill the empty niches. Instead, still-extant lemur species have shown, over time, an increasing reliance on habitats with dense forest cover.
Said UC's Crowley, "The reasons behind the increased reliance on densely forested habitats are uncertain, but it's likely that low hunting and logging pressures in forest reserves are contributing factors."
She added that while forested areas have experienced human disturbance, even greater disturbance has been documented in the unprotected open, drier areas where lemur species once flourished but have gone extinct.
According to UMass' Godfrey, it's not that lemur species of the past two millennia did not live in forested areas at all nor that today's species live only in forested areas. Rather, lemur species were once very common in other, drier and more open habitats in Madagascar and so, species were not so heavily reliant on forest habitat as they are today.
Added UC's Crowley, "It's been assumed that lemurs were in the forests because that's where the resources that best suited them were. Our fossil analysis shows that lemur species once preferred a much wider, more distinctive habitat range, which may mean that modern lemurs prefer the densely forested areas simply because these areas offer greater protection. The forest is more of a refuge."
If so, this could help explain other researchers' previously reported findings regarding "mismatches" between lemur anatomy and observed behavior of modern lemurs in the dense forest environments.
And such mismatches could be indications that today's lemurs are in ecological retreat and at risk if conservation and environmental management efforts don't take into account what were once, and may likely still be, their preferred habitats.
"In other words," explained Crowley, "We now have long-term historical data, a broadened historical perspective indicating that what lemurs are doing today preferring densely forested areas is not representative of their ecological niche over past millennia. That's an indication that we need to rethink our assumptions on their current habitat choices and on our own conservation efforts. And this form of historically informed research can also be applied to other locales and animals to benefit threatened species."

Senate committee cuts Pakistan aid over conviction

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A Senate panel expressed its outrage Thursday over Pakistan's conviction of a doctor who helped the United States track down Osama bin Laden, voting to cut aid to Islamabad by $33 million ? $1 million for every year of the physician's 33-year sentence for high treason.
The punitive move came on top of deep reductions the Appropriations Committee already had made to President Barack Obama's budget request for Pakistan, a reflection of the growing congressional anger over its cooperation in combatting terrorism. The overall foreign aid budget for next year had slashed more than half of the proposed assistance and threatened further reductions if Islamabad failed to open overland supply routes to U.S.-led NATO forces in Afghanistan.
Pushing aside any diplomatic talk, Republicans and Democrats criticized Pakistan a day after the conviction in Pakistan of Shakil Afridi. The doctor ran a vaccination program for the CIA to collect DNA and verify bin Laden's presence at the compound in Abbottabad where U.S. commandos found and killed the al-Qaida leader in May 2011.
"We need Pakistan, Pakistan needs us, but we don't need Pakistan double-dealing and not seeing the justice in bringing Osama bin Laden to an end," said Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., who pushed for the additional cut in aid.
He called Pakistan "a schizophrenic ally," helping the United States at one turn, but then aiding the Haqqani network which has claimed responsibility for several attacks on Americans. The group also has ties to al-Qaida and the Taliban.
"It's Alice in Wonderland at best," said Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt. "If this is cooperation, I'd hate like hell to see opposition."
One of the most forceful statements came from Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., who also serves as the chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence Committee. She pointed out that Pakistan has suffered at the hands of terrorists yet misconstrued what is treason in convicting Afridi. She also insisted that Afridi was not a spy.
"This conviction says to me that al-Qaida is viewed by the court to be Pakistan," said Feinstein, who said it made her rethink U.S. assistance.
The Appropriations Committee approved Graham's amendment to cut the assistance by $33 million on a 30-0 vote. The full Senate will vote on the overall bill, possibly this summer.
At the State Department, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said the United States believes Afridi should be released.
"His help was instrumental in taking down one of the world's most notorious murderers that was clearly in Pakistan's interest as well as ours and the rest of the world," Clinton told reporters, adding that the United States will continue to press the issue with Islamabad.
In crafting the overall legislation, the committee reduced Obama's request to aid Pakistan by 58 percent as resentment and doubts linger on Capitol Hill a year after bin Laden was killed deep inside Pakistan. Tensions between Washington and Islamabad have increased as Pakistan closed overland supply routes to Afghanistan after a U.S. attack on the Pakistani side of the border killed 24 Pakistani soldiers in November.
The United States and Pakistan failed to resolve the issue at the recent NATO summit in Chicago.
The congressional anger over the conviction and the supply routes extended to the Senate Armed Services Committee, which completed a $631.4 billion defense budget Thursday. The panel added a provision stipulating that before Pakistan can be reimbursed with coalition funds, the secretary of defense must certify that Pakistan is opening and maintaining the supply routes, is not supporting the Haqqani network, and not detaining or imprisoning Pakistani citizens, according to Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.
He referred to the conviction as a virtual death sentence.
The fierce congressional response in various committees "shows a common outrage," Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., told reporters.
Members of the Senate Appropriations Committee also complained about mafia-style extortion by Pakistan in seeking truck fees in exchange for opening the supply lines. The cost had been $250 per truck prior to the attack. Pakistan is now demanding $5,000 per truck. The United States has countered at $500.
The bill would provide just under $1 billion in aid to Pakistan, including $184 million for State Department operations and $800 million for foreign assistance. Counterinsurgency money for Pakistan would be limited to $50 million.
The legislation also conditions the counterinsurgency aid on Pakistan reopening the supply routes.
Islamabad won't get any of the funds for counterinsurgency or money in prior legislation unless the secretary of state certifies to the Appropriations committees that "the government of Pakistan has reopened overland cargo routes available to support United States and North Atlantic Treaty Organization troops in Afghanistan, and funds appropriated under this heading can be used efficiently and effectively by the end of the fiscal year," the legislation says
If the secretary can't certify to Congress, the money would be transferred to other accounts.
The overall legislation would fund the State Department, foreign operations and other programs at $52.1 billion, which is $2.6 billion less than what Obama requested for the 2013 fiscal year beginning Oct. 1 and $1.2 billion below current spending.
Wading into the dispute over Palestinian refugees, the panel approved a version of an amendment from Sen. Mark Kirk, R-Ill., that would require the secretary of state to submit a report to Congress on the number of Palestine refugees who were displaced by the 1948 Arab-Israeli conflict, the number of descendants and who receives assistance from the United Nations Relief and Works Agency.
The issue of whether to count refugees and their descendants is a divisive one. Some 5 million Palestine refugees receive assistance from the U.N. agency. A third of registered refugees live in camps in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.
The State Department and Jordan opposed the original Kirk amendment and it was modified by Leahy.

New assay to help in the diagnosis of mastocytosis
RICHMOND, Va. (May 22, 2012) The Food and Drug Administration has approved a new test to help physicians diagnose a group of rare cell disorders. The test, or assay, was developed by an expert at Virginia Commonwealth University in the field of mast cells.
Lawrence Schwartz, M.D., Ph.D., chair of the Division of Rheumatology, Allergy and Immunology and the Charles and Evelyn Thomas Professor of Medicine at VCU, has spent more than 30 years researching mast cells. These cells are vital to the inflammatory process within the body and may play protective roles in wound healing and fighting infections.
"When a mast cell is triggered, it releases several strong chemicals into the body, including histamine and tryptase. Histamine causes itching, swelling, wheezing and sneezing and other signs and symptoms of allergic reactions," said Schwartz.
Mastocytosis, a group of rare chronic disorders found in both children and adults, is caused by the presence of too many of these mast cells in the body. If there are too many mast cells, the increased burden of chemicals released from these cells can cause several symptoms that range in intensity from mild to severe.
Because mast cells play a role in allergic reactions, the symptoms of mastocytosis are often similar to an allergic reaction. However, mastocytosis may occur spontaneously rather than be triggered by an allergen.
The FDA has cleared ImmunoCAP Tryptase, a new diagnostic assay, to measure the level of tryptase in the blood as an aid in the diagnosis of systematic mastocytosis. A persistently elevated baseline level of tryptase is an indication of possible mastocytosis.
"A physician cannot diagnose systematic mastocytosis based only on a physical examination. The FDA approval of the tryptase assay will provide doctors with an additional diagnostic tool," said Schwartz.
VCU first licensed the assay in 1993 to Pharmacia, now named Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. The assay has one FDA-approved application helping to diagnose mastocytosis and several potential applications, including the diagnosis of systemic anaphylaxis, the prediction of increased risk for future episodes of severe anaphylaxis and use by medical examiners to evaluate cause of death.
"When somebody dies without a clear cause, by measuring postmortem tryptase levels, an increased level of tryptase provides support for an anaphylactic event near the time of death," said Schwartz.

Just found another good one.. Macdonalds.. its one of the best out there right now.. but just to test.. i might buy 1 stock of Coke and 1 of Macdonalds or should i just put all my money in one because i dont have that much money to do this (((($ 150))))
Answer:
You would make nothing. Zip. Nada. Nought.
Gold is a hedge, not an investment, and basically offers zero ?return?; one ounce of gold traded for enough money to buy a fine Men?s suit in the 1700?s, and it trades for enough money to buy the same thing today.
Buy two shares of Coke instead, or $ 100 worth of a Growth mutual fund, long-term you will actually make money?

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Police shot and killed a mountain lion that somehow made its way through an urban landscape before it was found early Tuesday in a downtown Santa Monica office building courtyard near an outdoor mall and a bluff-top park that offers tourists views of the ocean and the city's famed pier.
Authorities made multiple attempts to try and subdue the young male cat, including use of a tranquilizer and a pepper ball, before killing it, said Capt. Daniel Sforza of the state Fish and Game Department.
The mountain lion was found about 6 a.m. by a janitor in the courtyard near a popular open-air mall, the Third Street Promenade, and just a couple of blocks from the beach. The street that has a preschool, a church and other businesses was cordoned off as a precaution.
"It's not a risk we can take with public safety," said police Lt. Robert Almada.
It wasn't immediately known how the cat ended up in the middle of the city. The National Park Service has been monitoring mountain lions with GPS radio-collars and cameras more than two miles away in the Santa Monica Mountains.
A typical home range for mountain lions is around 200 square miles for adult males, said the agency that has been conducting a study since 2002 in the Santa Monica Mountains to determine how urbanization is affecting the large cats.
Jeff Sikich, a biologist working on the long-term study for the National Park Service, said a mountain lion had never been seen in the area where the cougar was found.
There are currently about 10 mountain lions in the Santa Monica range but the lion killed in the city was not among those previously known, he said.
Sikich said that by age 1 1-2 lions disperse from their mothers and try to establish their own territories, which are so large that one adult male could claim the entire Santa Monica range.
Young lions, however, are trapped within the range because it is bordered by freeways to the north and east, the ocean to the south and an agricultural plain to the west. Dispersing young males that encounter urban areas usually turn around, and those found dead have either been hit by cars or killed by an adult male defending its territory, Sikich said
"Large carnivores need a lot of space," he said.
Sforza said a necropsy will be performed to see if the mountain lion had rabies or any other diseases.
"It's very unusual," Sforza said of finding the mountain lion. "It's just really hard to speculate."
Lorraine Miller, 89, said she was driving to her novels class, part of a college emeritus program for seniors, when she learned the mountain lion was in the building's courtyard where she was supposed to go.
"It seemed at first it was some kind of tall tale," said Miller, who has lived in Santa Monica for more than 40 years. "Then after a while you see all of this action. It was overwhelming."
Mountain lions are one of the most widespread carnivores in the world with a historical range from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego, Chile. Hundreds of mountain lion sightings are reported every year in California, but attacks on humans are rare. Between 1890 and 2007, there have only been 16 attacks in the state, according to Fish and Game statistics.
Miller said she believes killing the mountain lion was the right, but unfortunate, option.
"In my opinion they were taking care of the public," Miller said. "Frankly you can't object to being taken care of."
Sikich, the biologist, said mountain lions are elusive and generally avoid people, but they are wild, unpredictable animals and this one was in an unnatural situation.
"It was a tough situation, especially for the lion, but also for everyone involved," he said.
Sikich, who arrived after the killing, took some of its hair for testing to determine if it is related to the other lions of the Santa Monica range, which lack genetic diversity because of their entrapment.

The Language of Social Media: C and D ? Radio Talent Coach Sam ...
E-mail thecoach@radiocoach.biz, 1 888 680 7234, Radio Talent Coach Sam Weaver is an authority on coaching air talent for traditional radio, Internet radio, and podcasting. Let Sam assist you in reaching your broadcast goals.
New Language
You are at a disadvantage if you visit a non English speaking country and can not speak the language. In order to effectively operate in the new world order of social media and social networking, it is important to understand the terminology. I have compiled a list of terms A-Z from various resources to assist you in learning social media language. It is going to take 13 blogs to cover all the information, time for C and D. Check older post for previous. (source references will be listed at the bottom of each post.
Channel:
A group of podcasts, each represents one mp3 audio file (or program). When subscribing to podcasts, it is the channel you subscribe to.
Chat:
Real time interaction on a web site, with a number of people adding comments via text.
Chat Room:
A designated online location for chat to take place. Unlike forums, chat room conversations are real-time exchanges.
Chicklet:
Internet slang for the little square icon indicating an RSS feed is available for a page. It?s also used to refer to the small buttons used to subscribe from a particular service, such as Google Reader.
Many podcatchers allow you to drag chicklets to add to your subscriptions. By the way , a podcatcher is an application you can use to subscribe to podcasts; the podcatcher automatically downloads podcasts as they are posted to a site. Podcatchers can also transfer downloaded podcast files to a portable media player
Clodpasting:
A lame attempt to use online audio programming to launch a career into show business. Noun: clodpast, a poorly conceived and/or executed digitally broadcast audio message.
Collaboration:
Being able to discuss and work with people across physical boundaries through the sharing of information enabled by a variety of online media (email, blogs, forums, chatrooms, podcasts, websites, and various social networking sites). Collaboration is considered one of the higher goals of social networking and software.
Comments:
Blogs often allow readers to add comments under items, and may also provide a feed for comments as well as for main items. That mean you can keep up with conversations without having to revisit the site to check whether anything has been added.
Commitment:
The ?social? aspect of social media means that tools are most useful when other people commit to using them too. Commitment will depend on people?s degree of interest in a subject, capability online, preparedness to share with others, degree of comfort in a new place, as well as the usability of the site or tool. If people are passionate about a subject and desperate to share and research, they will usually clamber over technical problems. But making things technically easier ? while desirable ? won?t usually gain people?s commitment on its own.
Communities:
Groups of people that connect using social networking technologies. The people in these communities often have common demographics and psychographics in addition to a common interest that pulls them together.
Community building:
The process of recruiting potential community or network participants, helping them to find involved.
Communitainment:
Coined by investment bank firm, Piper Jaffray, this term describes a trend involving consumers moving communication beyond a mere exchange of information to facilitate an exchange of content, ideas, and entertainment within an online social context. Examples, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare, etc.
Compensated Consumer-Generated Media (CCGM):
This is media where marketers pay consumers to do certain things, or when publishers compensate artists or content creators for submissions frequently based on their popularity, i.e. number of unique hits. Revenue-sharing models like Revver (potentially forthcoming on YouTube) apply an issue- or slant-agnostic approach to the compensation structure. Positive or negative, if your contribution draws the eyeballs (and provided you?re not using illegal content), you take a piece of the revenue. On the less savory side, if your video model is like PayPerPost, where contributors are outright paid to endorse or promote a product and the disclosure factor is submerged in murkiness, there?s a far higher risk and backlash factor.
Consumer Generated Media (CGM):
First-person commentary posted or shared across a host of expression venues, including message boards, forums, rating and review sites, groups, social networking sites, blogs, video-sharing sites, etc.
Consumer Generated Multimedia (CGM):
Consumer created sight, sound and motion components powered online using sites such as YouTube, MySpace, Facebook, iTunes, etc. This subset of CGM is more anchored to ?site, sound, and motion? components, each with the potential to dial up the effect and persuasiveness of the consumer storytelling. Visualization elevates drama, emotional resonance, and the ability to prove one?s case through documentation (one big reason TV commercials have been so hard for advertisers to shake). Video is far and away the most significant form of CGM2, and sites like YouTube and MySpace lead the pack. By and large, CGM2 reflects unaided, or organic, consumer content creation. It may implicate brands positively or negatively, but the marketer has no direct hand in its creation. The Kryptonite lock video is one of the earliest examples. Brands like Apple have seen plenty of CGM2 on both the positive and negative side of things.
Consumer ?Fortified Media (CFM):
Advertiser created digital media shaped and promoted by consumers through online commentary and debate.
Consumer-Solicited Media (CSM):
Often called ?co-creation? or ?participator advertising?, CSM involves an online advertiser who provides a format and invites visitors to add their content. Examples include ?create your own 30 second commercial?, ?upload your sponsor-relevant photo or video?, or ?send us your best recorded memory of how our brand impacted your life.?
Content Management Systems (CMS):
These are versatile software suites very important to social media, offering the ability to create static web pages, document stores, blogs, and wikis, among other tools. They allow consumers to make changes to a website without having to know code, a web designer, or any third parties. You still need a web developer to provide continuing technical support for situations beyond your cutting and pasting abilities.
Control:
Social networking is difficult to control because if people can?t say something in one place they can blog or comment elsewhere. That can be challenging for hierarchical organizations used to centrally-managed websites.Very perplexing to governments and government agencies, the best example of this was the Arab spring uprisings in the middle east.
Conversation:
Through blogging, commenting or contributing to forums is the currency of social networking.?At more length: A popular perception of bloggers is of people ranting on a virtual soapbox without knowing who is listening. While it may be true for some, the real rewards of blogging come from exchanges with others. Every blogger needs an audience ? and preferably one adding comments. Even better if another blogger picks up your item, adds a link and a little interpretation, publishes on their site, and puts a trackback to yours. That way you pick up readers coming in from the other site, and know from the trackback you have someone with whom to start a conversation. Even if there isn?t a trackback, you can set up searches to alert you when someone mentions your name, site or conversation thread on the Net.
Copyright:
Sharing through social media is enhanced by attaching a?Creative Commons?license specifying, for example, that content may be re-used with attribution, provided that a similar license is then attached by the new author. At more length: In the spirit of openness and sharing generally prevalent among social networkers, you will often find content labelled with a copyright license that allows you to re-use the material provided you provide an attribution. The Creative Commons site offers different licenses. One frequently used is Attribution-Share Alike, whereby you can alter and re-use the content provided you then add the same license. This may not appeal to people or organizations who like substantial control. Again, it is partly a cultural and personal issue, rather than a technical one.
Creative Commons License (CCL):
A copyright license that spells out how proprietary online content can be shared, reused or altered.
Crowdsourcing:
Refers to harnessing the skills and enthusiasm of those outside an organization who are prepared to volunteer their time contributing content and solving problems.
Culture:
Social media only works well in a culture of openness, where people are prepared to share. For that reason, commitment and attitude are as important as tools. Creative two-way communication and collaboration is unlikely to flourish in an organization where the norm is top-down control. When people in that sort of culture talk about networking they may have a hub and spokes model in mind, with them having some central control.
Cyberspace:
Widely used as a general term for the Internet or World Wide Web. More recently blogosphere has emerged as a term for interconnected blogs.
Default:
In computing, refers to the settings on any device that come ?out of the box?. It may be used loosely to suggest ?lowest common? ? so when trying to set up ways of collaborating online you may hear reference to email-with-attachments as the default. The challenge in social networking is that you may need to move from default mode to something customised to your requirements.
Democracy:
Social networking and media are potentially attractive to those who want to revive representative democracy, and those who promote participative approaches ? or both. Social media offers politicians and their constituents another communication channel. It also offers a wide range of methods for people to discuss, deliberate and take action. As to date, President Barrack Obama has been the most successful politian utilizing social media with voters.
Directory:
There are dozens of directories listing podcasts, serving as vertical search engines for podcasts; examples include iTunes, Yahoo! Podcast, Podcast Alley, Singing Fish, Podcast Pickle, etc.
Download:
To retrieve a file or other content from an Internet site to your computer or other device. The opposite is to download.
Download Fraud:
In a pay-per-download podcast advertising model, there is the possibility that someone could maliciously download a podcast to get advertising fees.

Syrian bloodshed spills into Beirut
Street battles between pro- and anti-Syrian groups in Beirut killed two people on Monday, a security official said, sparking concerns of a wider conflict in Lebanon.
The violence erupted hours after reports emerged that troops had shot dead Sheikh Ahmad Abdul Wahid, a prominent anti-Syria Sunni cleric, when his convoy failed to stop at a checkpoint in north Lebanon on Sunday. Another cleric in the car was also killed.
Washington expressed concern over the killings on Monday and urged restraint.
"We welcome the commitment of the Lebanese government and the Lebanese Armed Forces to conduct a swift and transparent investigation of the shooting incident," US State Department deputy spokesman Mark Toner said.
"And we call on all parties to exercise restraint and respect for Lebanon's security and stability," he said.
Protesters blocked roads and burned tyres in the northern region of Akkar following the killing of the clerics, and by evening the unrest had spread to the capital.
"During the night, groups of young men cut off the road in the Tareek el-Jdideh district and street battles followed," the security official said, requesting anonymity.
"Two people were killed and 18 were wounded," he said, adding machineguns had been fired and that the fighting had raged until about 3:00 am (2400 GMT).
An office housing a small pro-Syrian party in Tareek el-Jdideh, a mainly Sunni Muslim neighbourhood of west Beirut, was torched by partisans of ex-premier Saad Hariri's Future Movement and the facade of the building was riddled with bullets.
Several motorcycles and cars parked on the street below were burned.
Calm had been restored by daylight following appeals from Prime Minister Najib Mikati and other politicians.
However tension was palpable in the capital, where residents fear a repeat of sectarian clashes like those that left some 100 people dead in 2008 and brought the country close to civil war.
"I've had enough... of war," said Amal Khattab, a 40-year-old teacher and mother of two who lives in Tareek el-Jdideh.
"My children were terrified last night," she added, crying. "I can't spend another minute in this country."
Wahid's funeral was held on Monday in his hometown of El Bireh, in the northern Akkar region, where many businesses and shops were closed after Sunni religious leaders called for three days of mourning.
"We want a fair trial, and we want the killers of Sheikh Ahmad Abdul Wahid to be executed," Future Movement MP Khaled al-Daher said at the funeral.
A judicial official said military police were questioning 21 soldiers, including three officers, in relation to the death of the two clerics.
Their killing followed a week of intermittent clashes between Sunnis hostile to the Syrian regime and Alawites who support it which left 10 people dead in the northern port city of Tripoli.
The violence highlighted a deep split between Lebanon's political parties where the opposition backs those leading the uprising against Assad while a ruling coalition led by Shiite militant group Hezbollah supports the Damascus regime.
The Sunni-led opposition has accused Assad of seeking to sow chaos in Lebanon in order to relieve the pressure on his embattled regime.
Reflecting mounting fears of an escalation, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates urged their citizens to avoid travel to Lebanon.
Sheikh Nabil Kaouk, a high-ranking member of Hezbollah, hit out at the opposition on Monday accusing it of transforming the north of the country into a rear base for Syrian rebels.
"The opposition has intentionally dragged Lebanon into the Syrian crisis and transformed into into a corridor and base for armed Syrians," he told a rally in the eastern city of Baalbek.
Since the outbreak of the revolt in Syria in March of last year, thousands of Syrians fleeing the unrest in their country as well as activists have sought refuge in northern Lebanon.
Syria long held sway in Lebanese politics and had troops stationed in the country for 29 years until it was forced to withdraw them in 2005 following the assassination of ex-premier Rafiq Hariri.
It has denied accusations it was involved in his killing.
