NHL, players' union open labor negotiations with meeting

NEW YORK - The NHL and the players' union opened negotiations on a new labor deal Friday by meeting for about 2 1/2 hours.

Commissioner Gary Bettman and Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly met with NHLPA Executive Director Donald Fehr, union special counsel Steve Fehr and several player reps at the league's Manhattan offices.

"Members of our League Office staff and several of our owners met today with the NHLPA and various members of the players' negotiating committee at the League Office in New York," Daly said in a statement released after the meetings. "The meeting was very cordial and we hope it was constructive.

"Before breaking, the parties discussed follow-up steps and confirmed plans for future meetings. We have nothing further to report at this time."

Washington Capitals owner Ted Leonsis declined to comment as he left the building and hopped into a waiting car.

"Following today's meeting, we will review the NHL's initial presentation with the Players' committee before reconvening for further talks later next week." Donald Fehr said.

Among the players in attendance were Scott Hartnell of the Flyers, Rick DiPietro of the Islanders and George Parros of the Anaheim Ducks, Chris Campoli of the Canadiens, Dan Winnik of the Sharks, Brandon Dubinsky of the Rangers, Brad Boyes of the Sabres, Ron Hainsey of the Jets.

This was the first formal talks between the two sides. They come after the NHLPA's executive board held a three-day meeting in Chicago earlier this week.

The collective bargaining agreement expires Sept. 15. There is fear the league could be heading toward another lockout.

The owners locked out the players in 2004 and it cost the NHL an entire season. The agreement that came out of that deal put in place a salary cap for teams for the first time.

Fehr, the former head of the baseball players' union who was hired by the NHLPA after the last labor deal was cut, said Wednesday at a news conference in Chicago that the players would be willing to start the season without a deal if negotiations were ongoing.

J Rome Serenades Jennifer Nettles With 'Without You' During Week 6 of 'Duets' Competition

Jennifer Nettles

ABC

After a fifth consecutive week at the top of the scoreboard, expectations certainly ran high for Jennifer Nettles and protege J Rome to deliver another flawless performance during Week 6 of the ?Duets? competition. Did the clear frontrunner of the series step it up during the first live episode of the season with a performance of ?Without You? by R&B superstar Usher and famed DJ David Guetta?

?That was one of your weaker performances,? said mentor John Legend. Even with the minor criticism, the R&B singer ended his critique with praise. ?As usual, you delivered such a professional performance,? added Legend.

Much like his comments following Nettles? performance with John Glosson, Robin Thicke poked fun at the mother-to-be. ?I love J Rome, but my favorite part of the performance was watching Jennifer drop it like it?s hot,? said Thicke, commenting on the pregnant Sugarland leading lady?s impressive flexibility on stage.

?You are so ridiculous,? Kelly Clarkson gushed following the performance. The Texas native playfully threw her bright pink high heel toward the young singer while on stage, after threatening to do so following J Rome?s stellar performance of ?I Will Always Love You? last week. ?I can?t wait to come to your concerts one day,? said the ?Mr. Know It All? singer.

With his impressive showing throughout the entire season of the series, the young singer attributes much of his success to his celebrity mentor. ?She believed in me when I feel like no one else did,? J Rome admitted just before taking the stage.

Fans will have to wait until next week to find out of J Rome topped the leader board for the sixth consecutive week. Starting this week, the viewing audience is encouraged to vote for their favorites, with the contestant who received the least amount of votes sent home at the beginning of next week?s episode.

Hoping to see J Rome?s at No. 1 once again? Call 1-855-962-5002 to show your support! The call is toll-free from landlines.

Supreme Court turns away media companies' appeal

(AP) ? The Supreme Court has turned down media companies' plea to lift a prohibition on owning both a newspaper and a television station in the same market.

The justices on Friday denied the companies' appeal without comment. The media outlets say the restrictions no longer make sense in the Internet era.

The appeal also sought to get rid of other ownership limits including how many local television stations one company can control.

The companies say the rules make it harder for broadcasters and newspapers to do business and respond to competitors on the Internet, satellite and cable ? entities which don't face the same restrictions.

Critics of media consolidation have warned of the dangers of too many media outlets falling under the ownership of a handful of large corporations.

Delta expanding Gogo in-flight WiFi to select international flights beginning in 2013

Delta Airlines isn't a stranger to offering WiFi on many of its domestic US flights, but using Gogo's air-to-ground connection setup has essentially kept it from taking off over the seas. That's all set to change come 2013, however, as 150 of Delta's long-haul aircraft will make use of all those high-bandwidth Ku-band capacity satellites that Gogo has been acquiring over the past few months. The updated setup will ensure that you can update your Facebook status over the likes of the Atlantic, but it won't be fully rolled out until about 2015. By that time, the airline estimates it'll be operating around 1,000 Gogo-equipped aircraft worldwide -- not too shabby. If anything, the wait to hit 10,000 feet is surely going be more interesting for all the international work-a-holics out there. Hit up the press release after the break for more details in the meantime.

FEMA and National Weather Service launch Wireless Emergency Alert System

FEMA and National Weather Service launch Wireless Emergency Alert System

While it's a little later than expected, the free SMS emergency notification system has now gone live. Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) messages will be delivered to cell towers in affected areas, which will then broadcast them to all compatible devices in their range. While the system is looking to cover over 97 percent of the country, it's being gradually rolled out across carriers. Sprint and Verizon are both apparently ready for action and while we haven't heard about the status of T-Mobile or AT&T, the National Weather Service has stated that hundreds of smaller carriers haven't yet enabled the broadcasts. However, not all phones -- especially the more elderly bricks still in circulation -- will work with the system. To check whether your weighty cellular still passes muster, hit up the compatible device list at the CTIA link below.

comScore?s Ad Focus Ranking Confirms Rubicon Project, Ranked #2 in US Audience after Google, as the Largest Independent Display Ad Technology Platform for comScore 500 Publishers

Rubicon Project U.S. Internet audience in May estimated at 200 million unique visitors

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Rubicon Project, the #1 independent digital advertising technology platform for the comScore 500, has been ranked second in scale (measured by unique visitors)?only to Google in the comScore Media Metrix monthly ranking of Ad Focus properties for May 2012.

?This latest comScore ranking is validation of the strong value we are providing to comScore 500 publishers and to the ad buyers that want to reach the 200M US and 650M global unique visitor audience we have aggregated?

Rubicon Project's real time trading platform, REVV?, reached more than 200 million?visitors, or 90.6% of the entire U.S. Internet audience as measured by comScore. This places Rubicon Project as the second largest reach platform in the digital advertising industry, slightly behind the Google Ad Network, which reached more than 204 million of those visitors, or 92.5% of Americans online. In March and April, comScore estimated that Rubicon Project reached 187 and 195 million unique users ? illustrating how the company?s growing publisher base is increasing overall audience reach. Other top players in US audience reach from comScore?s Ad Focus ranking are many of the largest online media companies including AOL, Microsoft, and Yahoo!.

Rubicon Project?s industry leading audience reach is composed exclusively of the combined reach of its publisher customers? digital media properties. Operating as purely a digital ad monetization technology for publishers, with no owned and operated digital properties, REVV is the only ad tech platform amongst the top companies in audience reach that is independent, with its inventory sourced directly from publishers (not through intermediaries or buying relationships) and designed entirely to drive the best results for comScore 500 publishers.

?This latest comScore ranking is validation of the strong value we are providing to comScore 500 publishers and to the ad buyers that want to reach the 200M US and 650M global unique visitor audience we have aggregated,? said Nick Hulse, Chief Revenue Officer at the Rubicon Project. ?Our team has built a transparent, non-competitive platform, fully aligned with publishers business models. REVV meets publishers? needs for monetization by holding a real time auction for every ad impression with the full controls necessary to ensure brand safety and pricing requirements are met while simultaneously reducing operating costs. As we continue to innovate and enable premium publishers to maximize their revenue on REVV, we expect our market share leading footprint to grow even further.?

REVV currently has the largest installed base of comScore 500 publishers,?including 1/3 of the comScore 100,?and powers the largest independent marketplace for buyers, which includes more than 450 ad networks and more than 50 DSPs who bid for publishers? ad inventory. Rubicon Project?s acquisition of mobile ad platform Mobsmith in May further increases the company?s reach, offering?comScore 500 publishers and ad buyers a single platform and marketplace for buying and selling of both display and mobile ad inventory.

About Rubicon Project

Rubicon Project is the leading independent advertising technology company for the comScore 500 and reaches a global audience of 200 million US and 646 million global unique visitors monthly, 2nd?is reach to only Google (as measured by comScore). Rubicon Project?s real time trading platform, REVV?, helps publishers including 1/3 of the comScore 100 make more money by automating and optimizing monetization of their digital media advertising inventory through a real time auction to digital ad buyers, while ensuring brand safety, pricing control and reduced operational costs. Hundreds of?buyer channels (DSPs, Trading Desks, Ad Networks and Exchanges) representing more than 70,000 end advertisers access and bid on Rubicon Project?s publishers' inventory, forming one of the largest scale transaction marketplaces in any industry. A new candidate drug developed by researchers at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center has shown to stop breast cancer cells from metastasizing, according to a report published online in Chemistry & Biology.

In addition, the drug named Rhosin was also found to promote growth of early nerve cells called neurites. The new drug may hold promise for the treatment of various cancers or nervous system damage.

Rhosin precisely targets a single component of a cell signaling protein complex called Rho GTPases. Rho GTPases controls cell growth and movement throughout the body.

Yi Zheng, Ph.D., lead researcher and director of Experimental Hematology and Cancer Biology at Cincinnati Children's, explained:

"Although still years from clinical development, in principle Rhosin could be useful in therapy for many kinds of cancer or possible neuron and spinal cord regeneration. We've performed in silica (computerized) rational drug design, pharmacological characterization and cell tests in the laboratory, and we are now starting to work with mouse models."

For several years researchers have tried to identify safe and effective therapeutic targets for specific parts of Rhp GTPases, particularly for RhoA. RhoA is the center protein in Rho GTPases and is vital for the signaling function of the complex.

For example, enhanced RhoA activity in breast cancer makes the cancerous cells more invasive and causes them to metastasize. However, a deficiency of RhoA prevents cancer growth and progression.

Zheng explains that even with this knowledge researchers have been unable to successfully develop an effective small-molecule inhibitor for RhoA.

In this study, the team examined research describing the processes and functions of Rho GTPases and then used computerized molecular screening and computerized drug design in order to identify a druggable target site.

This technology also provided the researchers with a preliminary virtual simulation on the potential effectiveness of candidate drugs.

According to Zheng, the globular structure of RhoA makes it difficult for a small-molecule inhibitor to attach. However, the team found that Rhosin was able to effectively bind to two shallow surface grooves on the protein. As a result the drug was able to begin affecting cells.

The team also set out to determine whether the drug was effective at blocking guanine nucleotide exchange factors (GEFs). Guanine nucleotide is a vital energy source and signaling component of cells. GEFs need to be activated in order to set off the regulatory signaling of GTPases.

Once laboratory cells tests confirmed that Rhosin was able to target and bind to RhoA, the team then tested the drug's effect on cultured breast cancer cells and nerve cells.

According to the researchers, the drug was able to prevent cell growth in breast cancer cells without disrupting other vital cellular processes or affecting non-cancerous breast cells. These findings suggested that the drug is effective in targeting RhoA-mediated breast cancer proliferation.

In addition, the team treated neuronal cells with the drug, along with nerve growth factor, a protein that is vital to the growth and survival of neurons. Rhosin worked with nerve growth factor in a dose-dependent way to promote the proliferation of branching neurites from the neuronal cells.

Silverman: Top 10 NFL Defensive Players

By Steve Silverman-

(CBS) Less than a month from now, the Chicago Bears and the rest of their brethren around the National Football League will be strapping on the pads to prepare for the 2012 season.

This is a relief to any football fan who remembers last year?s labor dispute and the uncertainty that surrounded last season. This season is all about certainty ? there will be a season and it looks like the Bears have a great chance to push the Green Bay Packers in the NFC North and perhaps tweak the defending Super Bowl champion Giants as well.

There will be plenty of time to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of all the contenders, but there may be a considerable change to the league-wide philosophy that offense rules in the NFL.

That was all that seemed to matter during the regular season last year when the Packers, New Orleans Saints and the New England Patriots seemed to be far ahead of everyone else. The one thing you will notice is that none of those teams won the Super Bowl this year.

The Giants did and they had a solid offense with Eli Manning behind center. But what they really had was a compelling defense. They hit hard, they played well-designed schemes and they executed without mistakes.

They stopped the Packers and the Patriots on the way to the championship and their victory was a major statement that defense still matters. It?s a philosophy that the Bears seemingly subscribe to as well.

With that as a backdrop, let?s look at the top 10* defensive players in the league today. The players who will make you get out of your seat and the ones who make for appointment television.

1. LB DeMarcus Ware, Dallas? ? Ware is a player who took the responsibility on himself to give the Cowboys a legitimate pass rush. He looked around the rest of the team?s defensive lineup and saw there wasn?t much there when it came to pressuring the quarterback and he said, ?I?ll do it myself.? Ware had 19 ? sacks last season and when they were trying to secure a playoff spot in the final three games, he had 4 ? sacks. Ware uses his 260 pounds of muscle to overpower bigger blockers and as soon as he gets a half-step, he terrorizes quarterbacks.

2. DE Jared Allen, Minnesota ? Unlike a lot of top pass-rushing defensive ends, Allen never comes off the field and he will dominate against the run just like he does when it comes to harassing quarterbacks. Allen had a remarkable 22-sack season and he is all-but-impossible for anyone to handle in a one-on-one situation. He is anxious to come close to matching his sack total again this year.

3. DT Haloti Ngata, Baltimore ? One of the best interior linemen in the history of the game. At 6-4 and 330 pounds, Ngata is relentlessly hard working and he combines that attitude with explosive strength and surprising speed for a man his size. He had 64 tackles and managed to get five sacks. But apart from the numbers, Ngata cannot be ignored on any snap because he never takes a play off.

4. DE Julius Peppers, Chicago ? He is still a remarkable performer who remains one of the best athletes in the league at the age of 32. He was very effective last year?11.0 sacks ? while playing with a knee injury. If he can stay healthy, a dozen or more sacks is feasible.

5. CB Darelle Revis, New York Jets ? If you ask the ego-driven Revis, no ranking of defensive players would be accurate if the cornerback was not ranked first. Revis is much better at man coverage than anyone else in the game and unlike some top cornerbacks of the past (read Deion Sanders) he is not hesitant to step up and play the run. The ideal shut down corner who can demoralize even the best opposing receivers.

6.?? ILB Patrick Willis, San Francisco ? Prior to the 2011 season, the 49ers were a very bad football team with few players who could turn a game around. Willis was one of the few who could bring fans out of their seats. Willis is one of the game?s best tacklers and he excels at forcing fumbles. As he gets older, he makes up for the loss of a step with incredible instincts.

7.?? DE Jason Pierre-Paul, N.Y. Giants ? In three years, Pierre-Paul?s name is likely to be the first name on this list. He is coming off a season in which he recorded 16 ? sacks and terrorized quarterbacks all season. He?s also a solid tackler. He benefits from playing opposite Justin Tuck, but Pierre-Paul produces every game.

8.?? OLB Clay Matthews, Green Bay?While Matthews didn?t have the same type of numbers last year as he had in the past ? just six sacks ? he is a relentless player who wears down opponents. He has great on-field intelligence and is likely to make a game-changing play in the late going because he understands what the opposing quarterback wants to do.

9.?? DE Justin Tuck, N.Y. Giants ? After enduring an injury-plagued regular season, Tuck was perhaps the best player on the Giants during their Super Bowl run. He sacked Tom Brady twice in the Super Bowl and also had 1.5 sacks against the Niners in the NFC championship game. Tuck should dominate this year if he can stay healthy.

10.?? SS Troy Polamalu, Pittsburgh ? Polamalu remains a player who can do it all. He plays the pass well, has the hands to make big plays and is a terror against the run. Polamalu would rank even higher if he wasn?t such a gambler. He will find himself out of position because he thinks he knows what the offense will do and he rarely plays conservatively.

*? Ravens defensive end Terrell Suggs would have been the No. 6 player on this list had he not torn his Achilles while working out in the offseason. He could miss eight games or more.

For the Spoiled Housekeeper: A $1,000,000 golden vacuum

When you've got a lot of money?? and we mean a lot?? your first instinct may be to flaunt it with an ultra-expensive?Corvette-turned-speedboat or by buying?Celine Dion's French Canadian castle. But for the truly ostentatious, we offer this for your consideration: A $1,000,000 gold-plated vacuum cleaner.

The GoVacuum GV6272011,?currently on sale for $999,999 (seriously, that's the discount price?? it's been marked down by $1), is almost certainly the most expensive piece of house-cleaning tech that a billionaire who's really bad with their money can buy. It's a lightweight, commercial-grade vacuum, ideal for cleaning up the mess following those times your butler's butler accidentally knocks over your bowl of diamonds. And yes, this vacuum is 24-karat-gold-plated, presumably just because it can be.

Who, exactly, would be in the market for a million-dollar vacuum? Perhaps the unusually well-paid maid of a billionaire? A?Facebook founder turned carpet-cleaning hobbyist ready to take his game to the next level? Someone easily swayed by the swag offered by the vacuum rap in the video above? We're not sure exactly. But we dare not suggest you need to act quick on this million-dollar offer: This thing will likely be sitting on the sales floor for quite some time.

mother support, mothers group, kid's birthday parties, birthday party ...

Backyard Birthday Party Balloons

My own children?s birthdays have a way of sneaking up on me.

This could be because of my poor family planning the fact that all three of my children were born at very busy times of the year for our family (before and after the December holidays and just as the school year is ending).

Usually I remember their birthdays about 6-8 weeks before the actual date and think to myself, ?Oh, that?s still ages away. I?ll have plenty of time to prepare!? Only to be jolted a little less than 3 weeks prior to, when my child begins talking about their upcoming party and I realize?

?>? That I haven?t done a darn thing to make arrangements for it yet.

It wasn?t always like this. Yet, it seems that over the years, birthdays have gotten considerably harder to plan for.

Now it often seems that all things related to birthday parties just seem Way. Too. Complicated. (And ridiculously out of control.)

The Birthday To-Do List

1. Find a Date

First things first, you must pick a date. This may sound like the easiest part but I assure you,

It. IS. Not.

There are family schedules, friends? schedules, school schedules, sport schedules, work schedules ? loads of schedules to take into consideration. Take if from me, finding a date that fits our schedule, your schedule, their schedule, EVERYONE?s schedule is close to impossible.

2. Pick a Theme

Next, one needs to secure a party ?theme? ? because every party has to have a theme, right?

Personally, this is the point when the ?creative juices? in me begin to brainstorm for the perfect birthday party theme, one that factors in my child?s current likes, dislikes, favorite colors, foods, sports, etc. Eventually, after securing complete approval from my child that this is indeed going to be THE BEST fill-in-the-blank-with-the-choice-theme-of-the-year party EVER! ?

I always seem to manage to come up with the ONE ideal, individualized theme?

Which is not what the party store has available and/or in stock that year.

3. Find a Venue

If you think the term ?venue? sounds a little too formal for a child?s birthday party you are sorely misinformed. These days every place under the stars has jumped on the birthday party bandwagon ? it?s not just Chuck E. Cheese or ?bust? ? no-sir-ee!

There are movie theater parties, and swimming parties, and iceskating parties, and water park parties, and pottery-making parties, and bounce-house parties, and music parties, and of course the tried-and-true home birthday party (my personal favorite*).

*Important Note ? You may want to review To-Do List item #4 before deciding on your venue.

4. Prepare the Guest List

Nearly 12 years ago I spent days (maybe months?) on the difficult task of determining my own wedding guest list. Paring down my own child?s birthday party guest list comes in a very close second to that.

 • Who do you invite?
 • How many do you invite?
 • Do you invite the child?s whole class so no one feels left out?
 • Do you just invite girls?
 • Do you just invite boys?
 • Do you just invite neighborhood friends?
 • What about family?
 • And don?t forget about Facebook friends because you want to post all the photos on Facebook and you don?t want anyone to feel left out.

Soon your list has quite possibly grown to numbers that seem above ?maximum capacity? for your home. To-Do list item #3 ? the party venue ? now becomes a very important issue.

In our household, it also starts to become necessary at a certain age to separate the ?family party? and ?friend party.? Which now means ?rinse and repeat? steps 1-4 for party number 2. (Are you doing the math? This now means that 3 kids = 6 parties?)

5. Send out the Invitations

* Note: This is a very important step. DO NOT FORGET like I almost have a million times.

** See To-Do List item #2: Pick a Theme ? this is where picking a ?party-store theme? comes in handy so you don?t need to hand craft your own invitations like I often end up doing.

*** Afterthought: Waiting until later on this To-Do list item has parental advantages a direct effect on party attendance.

6. Plan the Party Activities and Timeline

Words to the wise:

 • Keep your party length manageable. Too much time = too much chaos.
 • Just because your child likes art projects/sports/chocolate cake (or whatever else you choose to fill your party with), doesn?t mean every other child there will (don?t take it personally).
 • Every kid I have ever met, anywhere ? loves pi?atas and water balloon tosses (just sayin?).

Happy Birth Day?

See?
Com. Pli. Cate. ED.
Ridiculously complicated.

Birthdays are supposed to be happy.

In fact, they should be happy moments for both the child and the parent in my opinion because ? speaking as a mother ? aren?t our children?s birthdays technically our ?birth? day too? It is a celebration of the day we gave birth to them.

One too many times I have found myself unnecessarily stressing about throwing the perfect party when it seems in looking back that no matter how small or big a birthday party ? it was STILL memorable in my child?s eyes.

So, after 3 kids, multiple party successes and failures, hosting birthday parties that have been ?off-sight? and ?on-location? ? ultimately this is what I?ve learned:

 1. Never judge another mother?s party venue choice.
 2. Try not to take it personally when my own child isn?t invited to another child?s birthday party.
 3. Don?t do more then I can personally handle ? it?s not worth it.

And when it?s all over, my only advice to all parents is to give yourself a pat on the back and smile. You did it!

Leave a Comment. What are your birthday party experiences like? Do you think planning your children?s birthday parties is getting too complicated? What birthday tips, tricks, and insights can you share with other mothers?

Evidence of life on Mars could come from Martian moon Phobos

ScienceDaily (June 29, 2012) ? A mission to a Martian moon could return with alien life, according to experts at Purdue University, but don't expect the invasion scenario presented by summer blockbusters like "Men in Black 3" or "Prometheus."

"We are talking little green microbes, not little green men," said Jay Melosh, a distinguished professor of earth, atmospheric and planetary sciences and physics and aerospace engineering at Purdue. "A sample from the moon Phobos, which is much easier to reach than the Red Planet itself, would almost surely contain Martian material blasted off from large asteroid impacts. If life on Mars exists or existed within the last 10 million years, a mission to Phobos could yield our first evidence of life beyond Earth."

Melosh led a team chosen by NASA's Planetary Protection Office to evaluate if a sample from Phobos could contain enough recent material from Mars to include viable Martian organisms. The study was commissioned to prepare for the failed 2011 Russian Phobos-Grunt mission, but there is continued international interest in a Phobos mission, he said. It will likely be a recurring topic as NASA reformulates its Mars Exploration Program.

A Phobos mission was discussed at NASA's Concepts and Approaches for Mars Exploration workshop and a report issued June 26 stated that the Martian moons are "important destinations that may provide much of the value of human surface exploration at reduced cost and risk."

Melosh collaborated with Kathleen Howell, the Hsu Lo Professor of Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering, and graduate students Loic Chappaz and Mar Vaquero on the project.

The researchers combined their expertise in impact cratering and orbital mechanics to determine how much material was displaced by particular asteroid impacts and whether individual particles would land on Phobos, the closer of the two Martian moons.

The team concluded that a 200-gram sample scooped from the surface of Phobos could contain, on average, about one-tenth of a milligram of Mars surface material launched in the past 10 million years and 50 billion individual particles from Mars. The same sample could contain as much as 50 milligrams of Mars surface material from the past 3.5 billion years.

"The time frames are important because it is thought that after 10 million years of exposure to the high levels of radiation on Phobos, any biologically active material would be destroyed," Howell said. "Of course older Martian material would still be rich with information, but there would be much less concern about bringing a viable organism back to Earth and necessary quarantine measures."

When an asteroid hits the surface of a planet it ejects a cone-shaped spray of surface material, similar to the splash created when someone does a cannonball into a swimming pool. These massive impacts pulverize the surface material and scatter high-speed fragments. The team calculated that the bulk of the fragments from such a blast on Mars would be particles about one-thousandth of a millimeter in diameter, or 100 times smaller than a grain of sand, but similar in size to terrestrial bacteria.

The team followed the possible paths the tiny particles could take as they were hurtled from the planet's surface through space, examining possible speeds, angles of departure and orbital forces. The team plotted more than 10 million trajectories and evaluated which would intercept Phobos and where they might land on the moon during its eight-hour orbit around Mars.

The probability of a particle landing on Phobos depends primarily on the power of the blast that launched it from the surface, Chappaz said.

"It is estimated that during the past 10 million years there have been at least four large impact events powerful enough to launch material into space, and we focused on several large craters as possible points of origin," he said. "It turns out that no matter where Phobos is in its orbit, it would have captured material from these powerful impact events."

After the team submitted its report, scientists identified a large, nearly 60-kilometers-in-diameter crater on Mars. The crater, named Mojave, is estimated to be less than 5 million years old, and its existence suggests that there would be an even greater amount of Martian material on Phobos that could contain viable organisms than estimated, Melosh said.

"It is not outside the realm of possibility that a sample could contain a dormant organism that might wake up when exposed to more favorable conditions on Earth," he said. "I participated in a study that found that living microbes can survive launch from impacts on rock, and other studies have shown some microscopic organisms can tolerate a lot of cosmic radiation."

This possibility has been a consideration for some time, and Michael Crichton's "The Andromeda Strain" brought it to public consciousness in 1969. However the movie scenario of a fatal contamination is unlikely, Melosh said.

"Approximately one ton of Martian material lands on Earth every year, " he said. "There is a lot more swapping back and forth of material within our solar system than people realize. In fact, we may owe our existence to life on Mars."

Howell also is optimistic that life is not unique to Earth.

"It's difficult to believe there hasn't been life somewhere out there in the vast expanse of space," Howell said. "The question is if the timeline overlaps with ours enough for us to recognize it. Even if we found no evidence of life in a sample from Phobos, it would not be a definitive answer to the question of whether or not there was life on Mars. There still may have been life that existed too long ago for us to detect it."

Melosh recently presented the team's findings at a joint NASA and European Space Agency meeting in Austria, and Chappaz will present the data at a meeting on July 14 in Mysore, India.

Infrared telescope can pick out the atmosphere on distant planets, smell what the aliens are smelling

Astronomers in Chile using the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope are now able to analyze the atmosphere on faraway planet Tau Bootis b. Using CRIRES, a supercooled infrared spectrograph bolted to the 'scope, the team was able to judge the size of the exoplanet -- and for the first time, take a reading of the atmosphere while not in transit. Historically, the only time researchers have been able to conduct atmospheric analysis is during the transit of its nearby star, which imprints the qualities of the atmosphere onto the light. The team found that Tau Bootis b is around six times the size of Jupiter, but its air is so thick with Carbon Monoxide that we'll have to look elsewhere to plan that expedition to the stars.
