Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach idled for fifth day

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A strike by clerical workers at the twin ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach idled most of the busiest U.S. cargo shipping complex for a fifth day on Saturday as container-laden vessels waited to be unloaded and marathon contract talks stretched into the night.

Some 10,000 members of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 63 were refusing to cross picket lines of some 500 striking clerical workers, effectively shutting down 10 of the two ports' combined 14 container terminals.

Four other container terminals have remained open, along with facilities for handling break-bulk cargo such as raw steel and tanker traffic.

Still, the strike marks the largest disruption of cargo traffic through the two Southern California facilities since a 10-day lockout at West Coast ports in 2002.

Estimates of the overall economic impact of the strike have run as high as $1 billion a day, including lost wages of dock workers, truckers and others idled by the walkout, and the value of cargo rerouted by shippers.

Although the strike, which began on Tuesday, comes after the busy pre-holiday shipping season, the diversion of at least nine ships during the walkout has heightened growing concerns about Southern California losing business to other ports.

"There's a lot of concerns here locally that this is exactly the kind of thing that has the potential to drive business away," said Richard McKenna, executive director of the non-profit Maritime Exchange of Southern California, which tracks shipping in the region.

The Port of Los Angeles, the nation's busiest container harbor facility, and second-ranked Long Beach together handled more than $400 billion in goods arriving or leaving the West Coast by ship, L.A. port spokesman Phillip Sanfield said.

In addition, the two ports directly or indirectly support roughly 1.2 million Southern California jobs - workers involved in moving freight to or from the shipping complex, experts say. That does not count ancillary employment of people hired in restaurants, retail or other businesses that provide various services to those workers.

The clerks had been without a contract for more than two years when labor talks with management broke off on Monday. The chief stumbling block has been the future of union representation for jobs that are lost through retirement.

MARATHON BARGAINING SESSION

Negotiations resumed Friday night and extended into the early hours of Saturday morning.

The two sides returned to the bargaining table later Saturday morning and "we're going to continue as long as it takes," said John Fageaux, an ILWU Local 63 spokesman. "We'll go late into the night, I'm sure, late into the morning."

Steve Getzug, a spokesman for the Harbor Employers Association of dock companies, said management was concerned that a prolonged strike could undermine the ports' image for reliability and thus encourage shippers to go elsewhere in an increasingly competitive environment.

"So that's why the employers are looking to reach a settlement in good order," he said.

ILWU leaders are demanding that jobs traditionally performed by their members remain classified as union work and subject to the union's contract terms, even after individuals holding those jobs retire. They accuse the management of seeking to outsource union clerical jobs to overseas workers paid far less in wages and benefits.

The employers insist on reserving the right to fill only those jobs that need to be filled, and they accuse the union of seeking to featherbed work that is unnecessary, even after jobs are lost through retirement.

At least nine container ships that were due at Los Angeles or Long Beach since the walkout have taken their cargo to other harbors in Northern California, Mexico or Panama, the Maritime Exchange reported.

Five other container vessels were anchored just outside the Los Angeles-area port complex on Saturday waiting for their destination terminals to reopen, the exchange said.

The two ports together normally receive between six and seven container ships a day, and there is reason to worry that Southern California could ultimately lose some of that business, McKenna said.

The Panama Canal, for example, is being widened in a project slated for completion in 2015, which would allow some larger ships to avoid docking on the West Coast, he said.

SugarSync

File synchronization is a service that every modern computer user needs, and SugarSync, a longtime PCMag.com Editors' Choice, is one of the best and simplest freemium services you'll find for personal use. A recent update to SugarSync's desktop client, version 2.0 (beta) , adds some new functionalityand creates a more seamless syncing experience by echoing the interfaces of the service mobile apps.

In a nutshell, file-syncing services enable you to access the most recent copy of all your files without emailing them to yourself or sticking them on a USB drive and carrying it around with you. SugarSync and similar services synchronize your files as you work on them on which ever computers and mobile devices you choose. A Web account serves as a backup method for getting at your files when you're using a shared or borrowed device, like a computer at an Internet caf?.

Major competitors in the personal file-syncing space, such as Dropbox (also an Editors' Choice) and Box all tend to be very good, if not excellent, with only a handful of differentiating factors, and many of those differences are more a matter of personal preference than "good, better, best." SugarSync remains one of my favorites because of its reliability, control over choosing just what to sync, support for all major platforms, and now its improved look. I can't imagine recommending any other service as a first option. SugarSync is not, however, the only service I use (I have a system for using different providers for different purposes). There's no reason to just choose one.

As simple as SugarSync is, anyone new to file synchronization needs to heed a few warnings. First, take two minutes to learn what file synchronization is and what it means. Synchronization is not the same as backup (although you do get some of the same perks), so you should not use it to free up space on your hard drive. When you "sync" something from your computer, don't then delete it!

SugarSync Accounts and Prices
To use SugarSync, you'll need an account. Sign up for a free account to get 5GB of space, or opt to pay for more. You can get 30GB of cloud storage for $4.99 per month or $49.99 per year; 60GB for $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year; 100GB for $14.99 per month or $149.99 per year; and 250GB for $24.99 per month or $249.99 per year.

See the chart below for more details on how SugarSync's price for storage space compares with other plans. Click the image to enlarge it.

You can sign up for a SugarSync account either before or after downloading and installing the client software. Launch SugarSync locally, and it will prompt you to login (or create an account) and name your PC or Mac, such as "Home laptop." And that's it. You're in.

What's New in Version 2?
If you haven't used SugarSync before, you'll first need to mark which files and folders you want to sync before SugarSync starts to look like much of anything.

Existing users will see a list of all the data they already have synced in the main window of the new interface. Its design closely resembles that of a mobile app, especially in its default dimensions (you can resize it). A top-line menu offers three choices?SugarSync, Tools, and Help?where you can access basic tools and operations. Below the top-line menu are three app-like buttons for Cloud, Sharing, and Activity, and to the far right, there's a search icon. Cloud, the default, shows the list of folders currently being synced, rather than of devices. That's the first major and noticeable difference from the old SugarSync. The message is, "Don't worry about where the data originated. All that matters is that it's here."

Drag-and-drop. SugarSync reserves a noticeable aqua-colored area at the top of the app for drag-and-drop functionality. Want to sync a folder? Just drag it into this new space. You can still right-click on folders or files anywhere on your computer to sync them, too, a feature I've always appreciated in SugarSync. When you sync a file or folder to SugarSync, you don't need to physically move the items anywhere, like you do with Dropbox. Just mark it to sync and it does. You'll see a small green circle with white checkmark that indicates the data is synced and up to date. When it's in the process of syncing, you'll see a curved white arrow in place of the checkmark. If you lose your Internet connection while working and your data changes state (like if you edit a file), the green icon will disappear completely until the next time you reconnect and SugarSync can once again sync the changes you've made in your files.

Cloud. Hover over any folder in the Cloud view, and you'll see whether it's synced to the machine that you're currently using. Click an information icon to see additional details about the original source of the data, where else it's synced, whether it's shared, and how much space it consumes. Click "Advanced" in this information pane, and you can add or edit the folder's label and remove the folder from SugarSync altogether.

Short-handed Spurs fall to Heat, 105-100

MIAMI (AP) ? When Gregg Popovich gives his best players a night off to rest, it's not uncommon for the San Antonio Spurs coach to get letters from upset fans.

This time, he's going to hear from an upset commissioner ? even after Popovich's short-handed team nearly knocked off the Miami Heat.

Ray Allen's 3-pointer with 22.6 seconds left gave Miami the lead, LeBron James finished with 23 points and the Heat rallied to beat the Spurs 105-100 on Thursday night ? digging deep despite San Antonio's decision to have four top players resting at home in a move that bothered NBA Commissioner David Stern.

The Spurs played without Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili and Danny Green, all sent back to San Antonio by Popovich, who said the move was in his team's best interest.

"I don't think Pop was in the wrong," James said.

Stern disagreed, calling the decision "unacceptable," apologizing to fans and saying that sanctions against the Spurs will be forthcoming.

"Oh, it would have been great if we won," Spurs forward Matt Bonner said after hearing about Stern's statement. "It goes back to what I was saying, I'm sure everybody else was saying before the game. We have faith in everybody on our roster. We think we have one of the deepest teams in the league."

The Heat weren't disagreeing afterward.

"We survived," Chris Bosh said. "And we won. They have a bunch of talented guys over there. I know that nobody's going to really give them credit, but they are a tough bunch."

How tough? Try this ? the Spurs led by seven with 4:48 left, and the margin was 98-93 when Gary Neal made a 3-pointer with 2:14 remaining.

From there, Miami closed on a 12-2 run.

But all anyone will likely remember from this one is Popovich's decision ? and whatever Stern does as a result.

"I apologize to all NBA fans," Stern said. "This was an unacceptable decision by the San Antonio Spurs and substantial sanctions will be forthcoming."

Allen scored 20 points, Dwyane Wade added 19 and Chris Bosh finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds for Miami, now 7-0 at home.

Neal had 20 points for the Spurs. Tiago Splitter scored 18 points, Nando De Colo added 15, Boris Diaw scored 12 and Bonner had 10 for San Antonio, which finished a six-games-in-nine-nights road trip with a 5-1 record. Bonner also had 10 rebounds, one more than he had grabbed all season entering the game.

"Pop is the coach of the San Antonio Spurs," Neal said. "He did what's best for us."

The Spurs' five starters Thursday night came into the game averaging a combined 23.6 points, or 1.6 points less than James averaged entering the game.

And when the Heat ran out to a 16-6 lead, it seemed a blowout was in the offing. After all, even the oddsmakers in Las Vegas expected it to be that way ? the Heat were favored by six points in most sports books before the news broke that the Spurs' regulars were resting, after which the line swelled to 13.

Apparently, no one told the Spurs that the second-string was supposed to play second-fiddle.

San Antonio closed the first quarter on a 21-6 run, taking a 27-22 lead after the period, and simply did not go away. The Spurs led by as many as seven at one point, and after James Anderson made a pair of free throws with 0.6 seconds left in the third, San Antonio held a 76-73 lead heading into the final 12 minutes.

But once again, James-to-Allen proved magical for Miami.

With the Heat down by one, James nearly lost the ball in the lane, collected himself and kicked it out to Allen, who connected from the left wing to put Miami ahead to stay. James also set up Allen for a final-moment four-point play to lift Miami over Denver earlier this season, along with another late 3-pointer that helped the Heat edge Cleveland last weekend.

"Every time a guy turns his head I have to find the open spot so LeBron can see me," Allen said. "Anything can happen out there. We put ourselves in such a tough situation, but we kept plugging away."

Thing is, no one ever thought it would come down to that.

Before the game, Popovich said he decided to sit his core when he saw how challenging this particular part of the schedule was for his team.

"Everybody has to make decisions about their schedule, about players playing and back-to-backs and trips and that sort of thing," Popovich said before the game. "In our case, this month we've had 11 away games, after tonight. We've had an eight-day trip and a 10-day trip, and we're ending it with four (games) in five nights here. I think it'd be unwise to be playing our guys in that kind of a situation, given their history."

It's not unlike other moves Popovich has made before; in fact, not only did he give Duncan, Parker and Ginobili time off together toward the end of last season, which was condensed by a lockout, he actually flew home to San Antonio with them and took a two-game, pre-playoff sabbatical.

This decision, Popovich said, was more about a home matchup with surging Memphis on Saturday.

"Perhaps it'll give us an opportunity to stay on the court with Memphis on Saturday night," Popovich said. "Historically, when you're on a long road trip, that first game when you come home is really tough. And Memphis is one of the best teams in the league. They're of much more concern to us than playing four games in five nights. It's pretty logical."

Given Stern's statement, it's also logical to think that the Spurs could know their penalty by Saturday as well.

NOTES: Miami last played on Saturday, at home; San Antonio had played on Sunday, Monday and Wednesday, all on the road. ... A moment of silence was held before the game for Sasha McHale, the daughter of Houston coach Kevin McHale. Sasha McHale died Saturday at age 23. ... It was the third straight home game in which Miami trailed in the fourth quarter.

Fisker Suspends Production of the Karma

California-based Fisker Automotive has halted production of its plug-in hybrid Karma luxury sedan after battery provider A123 filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last month. The automaker says it is suspending production until a buyer is found for the failed battery manufacturer.

The news, first reported by Bloomberg yesterday, is yet another setback to the fledgling automaker, which lost 300 European-bound Karmas during Hurricane Sandy and continues to delay production of its mass-market mid-size Atlantic sedan

Fisker will be waiting to see what happens when A123 is auctioned off on Dec. 6. Top suitors include U.S.-based JCI Industries and the Chinese Wangxing Group.

"Because we have no batteries, there?s no production right now. Inventory is starting to get a little low," Fisker CEO Tony Posawatz told Bloomberg. "We?d like to restart production as quickly as possible. We should know the outcome of the auction by the middle of December."
